In addition to obtaining their Act-120 certification, (currently over 500 hrs of training) through the State of Pennsylvania, each officer is required to go through additional 18-20 weeks of training within the department after being hired. During this time they are assigned to work with an FTO (Field Training Officer) almost exclusively. An FTO is a specially trained officer who has gone through a special FTO certification program. These officers usually have substantial street experience before undertaking this responsibility and many have obtained the FTO training at their own request or even on their own time. . This FTO program is designed to further train (over and above what the State of PA requires), and evaluate new officers. The FTO program in the Lebanon City Police Department is a voluntary assignment. The officers involved in this program are highly dedicated. There is a substantial responsibility and time investment in being an FTO and these officers participate in the program without additional compensation.
Once an officer completes his training
and
goes on the street himself he continues to be on probation for a period
of
two years. During this period of time he is constantly monitored
and
evaluated by his supervisors. This period of training and
evaluation
brings a very well rounded, and trained officer to the community.
