Officer Shot
On August 5, 1992 Sgt. Donald Brandt and Officer William Harris responded to a request for assistance involving a man suffering from a mental disorder at a residence on the south side of town. Sgt. Brandt being a native of Lebanon and a twenty four year veteran of the Lebanon Police Department, knew the suspect personally. As Sgt. Brandt attempted to calm the suspect and negotiate with him, the suspect produced a .38 cal revolver and fired several rounds. One of these rounds struck Sgt. Brandt in the upper torso tearing through his body and lodging in his lower back.
A 24 hour a day manhunt was conducted and the suspect eventually was taken into custody without further injury or incident.
Although Sgt. Brandt was injured seriously he eventually recovered and went back to work at his job as a police officer in Lebanon serving the community he worked in. Sgt. Donald Brandt lived to retire a few years later. He cheated death, many other police officers are not so lucky.
Below is a photograph of the actual bullet removed from Sgt. Donald
Brandt's body. Although only a fraction of an ounce in
weight and minute in size. A small piece of lead similar
to this one kills police officers every day.
